It’s 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome was the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of one million people, and the seat of a great empire. The republic was founded on the principles of power-sharing and fierce personal competition, never allowing one person to take absolute control.

Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) ends a years-long campaign to conquer Gaul. In the process of conquest, he became rich and perfected a deadly army led by the Thirteenth Legion, a group of people willing to follow his every order. The two members of the thirteenth battle, Lucious Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur), are the main characters of the show.

Vorenus is a conscientious soldier and a family man. She was respected by men and by Caesar himself. Pullo is a womanizer and a designated drinker. His fierce fighting skills and rebellious style also made him popular. The uneasy relationship between Vorenus and Pullo begins when circumstances force them to work together on a very important mission for Caesar.

Back in Rome, Casesar’s cousin Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is an ambitious and jaded gamer from the Roman nobility. Together with Servila, Caesar’s mistress, we have two women who rival any man in the empire for cunning and cruelty. Atia’s son (and future Emperor of Rome) Octavian (Max Pirkis, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) is a devious teenager with a deep understanding of Roman politics.

Caesar’s main opponents were Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey was co-consul of Rome with Caesar. The battle between Caesar and Pompey is primarily will and reason. Finally came to the sword. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar was far more complex. Caesar needed Brutus and his influential family to legitimize his rule, but Brutus was a republican who resented Caesar’s imperial ambitions. Their father-son relationship is a source of great internal conflict for both of them.

Caesar’s power struggle and its consequences for Rome are the backdrop from which the entire conflict of characters unfolds. Politics, personal rivalries, friendships, and some very Oedipal relationships are deftly combined with historical facts to tell the unique story of Rome during one of its most important periods. Rest assured, I have only scratched the surface here. There are many characters and storylines in this sprawling story that I leave for viewers to discover.
